Car Stuck in a Ditch in Central Florida? Here’s What to Do
June 18, 2026 4 min read McCoy Towing
One second you're driving, the next a wet shoulder, a sharp curve or another driver has put you nose-down in a ditch. It's jarring — but what you do in the next few minutes decides whether this is a simple recovery or an expensive one.
1. Stop and check for injuries
Take a breath. Make sure you and your passengers are okay. If anyone is hurt, call 911 right away.
2. Don’t spin the wheels
The instinct is to gun it and drive out. In mud, sand or grass that usually digs you in deeper, overheats the clutch or transmission, and can damage the underside. If the car isn't rolling out easily, stop.
3. Get to a safe spot
If you can safely exit, get away from the travel lanes — well off the road, behind a barrier if there is one. Turn on your hazards so you're visible.
4. Call for a proper winch-out
Getting a vehicle out of a ditch isn't about brute force — it's about the right angle and rigging so the car comes out the way it went in, without bending a bumper or tearing off a fascia. Our WreckMaster-certified operators handle accident recovery and winching from ditches, medians, mud and soft shoulders every day.
5. Let us check it before you drive on
After a slide-off, a quick look for leaks, tire damage or a knocked-out alignment can save you a second breakdown. If it needs the shop, we'll tow it there.
