Jump Start, Tire Change, or Tow? How to Know What You Actually Need
June 5, 2026 4 min read McCoy Towing
When your car won't go, the big question is: do you need a quick roadside fix, or a tow? Knowing the difference can get you back on the road faster — and often cheaper. Here's a simple triage.
It’s probably a battery (jump start)
If the engine cranks slowly, the dash lights are dim, you hear a click, or the car was fine yesterday and dead this morning, it's usually the battery. A jump start gets you moving in minutes — and if the battery is truly done, we can replace it on the spot.
It’s a tire (change or repair)
A flat, a blowout or a slow leak doesn't need a tow — just a tire swap to your spare or a quick plug. If you don't have a usable spare, that's when a tow comes in.
You’re locked out (no tow needed)
Keys locked inside? A lockout is a roadside service, not a tow. We can get most vehicles open without damage.
When you genuinely need a tow
- The car won't start and it's not the battery
- Overheating, smoke, or warning lights you shouldn't drive on
- Transmission won't engage, or strange noises/grinding
- After an accident, or the vehicle isn't safe to drive
- No usable spare for a flat
